Wildflower Studio

Halfmoon Bay, BC, Canada
In progress

Rising from a meadow covered hillside and looking out through a dense forest canopy, the wildflower studio is a discrete sanctuary in an ocean of green. The ecosystem around it is all encompassing. First imagined as a place of rest for clients who lead busy professional lives, the Wildflower project consists of a series of structures ascending the hillside. With a larger house to follow, the studio is situated at the base of the slope. Intended as a “first foothold” on this wild property, the studio will transition to an auxiliary space for guests and hobbies when the house is completed.

Seeking to disturb as little as possible the extraordinary biodiversity of the meadow, the studio substitutes a traditional foundation for the lighter touch of wooden posts. The exterior cladding continues the tones and textures of the monumental forest in front, with much of the exterior clad in cedar shingles and wooden boards stained to match the color of Western redcedar bark. On the interior, light plywood trim frames the openings, causing incoming light to become warm and diffused. The open stair leading to the loft is set against a subtly shifting green wallpaper, reminiscent of where the studio gets its name.
