Talus House

Vancouver, BC, Canada
Decoding Density Competition 2024

Talus Hill takes inspiration from British Columbia’s striking natural landscapes and the deeply rooted aesthetics of West Coast Modernism, presenting a dynamic alternative to the single-family-house paradigm. Cascading upwards from the sidewalk and inviting you in, a sculptural staircase unites two halves of a new ‘hillside’ neighborhood consisting of an open-air market and 16 dwellings of different sizes. The stair provides not only access and egress, but also moments of connection between residents of different family types, ages, and backgrounds.

Social sustainability is the idea that a building’s value to its community determines its longevity. A building beloved by its residents and neighbors will be preserved with greater care than one with a less generous design. Talus Hill gives outdoor spaces to all, venues for neighborhood industries, dwellings for multi-generational families, thoughtful and context-informed design, and a vision for urban living which combines the comfort of unique personal homes with the advantages of density.
